The dead appear in cabinet cards,
ghosts in black-ribboned frames
morbid enough for Queen Victoria.
Infants look innocently well.
Cherub twins—cupid awake, cupid asleep.
Naked apart from velvet drape,
bows and arrows posed in their small dead hands,
rose petals scattered at their feet.
Adults in their Sunday best
propped up in parlor chairs—
all scrubbed and combed
more than they ever were in life—
dully staring straight ahead
as if traveling by train to some far-off place,
no one to greet them when they arrive.
